“As you go forward in our wonderful and complicated world, never are opportunities more available, challenges more complicated, nor the need to craft solutions more important,” “I know you will contribute significantly as leaders of our state, nation and world. That’s part of your heritage now as a University of Idaho graduate. We only grant degrees to the uncommon student.”—Former University of Idaho President, Timothy White at the university’s 113th commencement. Read more.

What to do if you win a financial award?

If a financial aid award arrives in your mailbox — physical or virtual — what will you do? Here are a few tips:

  • Respond to all notices in a timely manner. If you receive a financial aid award, it is important to consider it and respond to it as quickly as possible. Some grants and scholarships may have limited funds available, so if too much time goes by, the award can disappear. Check with the financial aid office if you have award expiration questions.
  • Activate your VandalMail and VandalWeb! notifications and alerts and check your student mailbox on a daily basis; missing any of the financial correspondence could cause you to miss important deadlines.
  • Verify which of your awards will require repayment and plan accordingly. Some awards you receive may only be loans.
  • Look at your bottom line, not just the total dollar amount of your awards. Check the university’s estimated cost of attendance and consider it along with your personal budget for college.
  • Evaluate your own situation with all awards, as well as your existing finances, and decide what works best for you.
