President’s Doctoral Scholars

In addition to regular research assistantships, the University of Idaho is offering $10,000 supplements aimed at fostering new opportunities for underrepresented minority doctoral students in STEM programs.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed and awardees selected by a multi-disciplinary faculty committee which includes the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and directors of sponsoring programs. Selection will be based on the applicant’s achievements, potential for success in the chosen discipline, academic excellence (based on references and academic record), a description of how the choice of this student will promote diversity within the department, and the source of available funding for this program.

Expectations
Recipients are expected to maintain full-time status and make continuing progress toward completion of the degree as determined by the student’s major professor and graduate committee. “Satisfactory progress” is defined as earning a 3.00 or better grade point average each semester, and performing scholarly/creative activity that is considered of acceptable quality by the student’s major professor and graduate committee, if one is required.

Renewal
The two-year award may be renewed for one additional year (for a total of three years), contingent upon satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree, and success in the renewal competition. It is expected that the student, the major professor, and the department will work together to ensure the necessary funding is available in any subsequent semesters/years required to complete the degree requirements.
