IGERT Program Elements
A workshop for new and continuing trainees and participating faculty will include research presentations by faculty, a tour of laboratory and field facilities, and introduction to interdisciplinary epistemology using the Toolbox Project developed by a previous UI IGERT project.
The trainees’ program will begin with close faculty mentoring during the selection process where they will identify a federal or state agency, Tribe, or NGO in the Columbia River Basin in which to intern during their first summer.
The end-of-summer workshop will synthesize experiences, identify initial broad science questions, shape conceptual models of system elements, and initiate development of trainee teams. The workshop will also be used to identify critical coursework that will become the core of trainees’ academic programs.
Collaborative Approaches to Systems Analysis (CASA):
The CASA is a sequence of training activities that will create the process and education environment to develop innovative thinking and research integration. It includes courses and workshops in the first year, and elective courses in following years.
International Research and Education Experiences:
The international components provide opportunities for comparative approaches to adaptation in different countries and for students to develop a global perspective. Two components are offered to all trainees through partners in Canada and Chile. The first is the Biobío River Basin immersion field course, a core element required for all trainees. The second is the opportunity (elective) for trainees to engage in active research, education, and outreach programs with our international partners in Chile and Canada.
Engagement with the Universities Consortium on Columbia River Governance (UCCRG):
IGERT trainees will engage with the UCCRG by developing an annual research symposium. The symposium venue rotates among the universities associated with the UCCRG (University of Washington, University of Montana, Oregon State University, and University of British Columbia). This will be an annual professional development and networking event developed in coordination with the consortium schools. The symposia will feature research by IGERT trainees, products of IGERT research integration and knowledge co-production, research by related UI research programs, and more.
