FAQs for Current Students


How many faculty need to be on my graduate committee?
For the thesis option, four faculty members are necessary. Social, physical and biological sciences and two colleges need to be represented. For the non-thesis option a major professor and the program director are required.

How do I choose my committee?
Your major professor is automatically a member of your committee. You should ask faculty members to be on your committee that compliment your research interests but that will provide balance from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Can I audit classes? How many?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of classes a graduate student can audit, however, audited courses cannot count on your study plan.

What if I get a "D" in a course?
Only courses with a grade of "C" or better can be placed on your study plan.

Do I need to present my research?
Yes, for both thesis and non-thesis options you will need to present your research. Many students present in their EnvS 501 class.

Where can I find specific information about the thesis format?
The College of Graduate Studies has a thesis and dissertation handbook.

Do I have to publish my research if I am doing a thesis?
You have an obligation to make your research available to other scholars so you are highly encouraged to publish in referred journals or presses.

What is the difference between thesis and non-thesis?
The non-thesis option requires 3 credits of non-thesis research and 27 credits of coursework. A thesis option required 6 to 10 credits of research, a thesis defense and a written thesis, and 24 credits of coursework.

After I defend my thesis, how long do I have to turn in my final thesis to the College of Graduate Studies so that I can graduate?
You have six months from the day you defend to turn in your thesis.

How many copies of my thesis do I need to submit?
You are required to submit two copies on bond paper to the College of Graduate Studies. The Environmental Science Program and your major professor will need one copy (not required on bond paper).

What if I fail my defense?
You have three months in which to re-present your thesis.
