International Applicants

Your future is waiting, and the University of Idaho is ready to help you on your journey with challenging courses, a safe campus, affordable fees, extensive career development and a sense of belonging.

Academic requirements:

All Graduate School applicants must possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. Access our Bachelor’s Equivalency page.

For Admissions purposes, international students must meet academic and language requirements. Admission is dependent on credentials that demonstrate the applicant's capacity to succeed academically at the university level.

University of Idaho evaluates foreign courses and academic transcripts in terms of approximations. We will accept evaluations from professional credential evaluation services.

Individual department requirements may be more rigorous than the general University of Idaho requirements. In those situations, final admission is based on the department's decision. Students who meet academic requirements but who fall short of the University of Idaho's minimum language requirements can apply for deferred admission. To apply for Deferred Admission you must submit all other required documents.

Please Note: Students transferring to the University of Idaho from another U.S. college or university MUST notify their current International Student Adviser of their plans to transfer to the University of Idaho.

Graduate Application Requirements:

  • An international application for admission.
  • $60 application fee: this fee is non-refundable and cannot/will not be waived and must be received before your application and supporting documents will be recorded, evaluated, or considered.
  • Proof of English proficiency.
  • Official transcripts, certificate(s), diploma(s), or government examination report(s) received from any college or university previously attended.
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • A detailed, written statement of academic and career objectives/goals.

Some programs/departments require submission of additional documents. Contact the department to which you are applying to determine if there are additional requirements.

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

European institutions are moving quickly to standardizing units of academic credit under the European Credit Transfer System.

The National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Academic Credentials has provided the following information on the ECTS system.

"ECTS credit has the following characteristics:

  1. 1 ECTS credit represents between 24 and 30 hours.
  2. ECTS credits are awarded only upon the completion of work and the assessment of that work.
  3. Work may be completed through a variety of methods and is not expressed solely in terms of contact hours."

Council recommendation:

"One ECTS credit is comparable to one half (.50) semester credit [.75 quarter credit] at a regionally accredited post-secondary institution in the United States. "

Important Notes:

  • All documents are subject to verification.
  • All documents received by the University of Idaho become the property of the University of Idaho and will not be released to the applicant or third-party.
  • The University of Idaho evaluates credentials earned through formal academic training only. Applicants should NOT submit documentation of informal, nonacademic training with their application; any such documents will not be evaluated.

Financial Support:

In order to study in the U.S., students must also meet financial requirements as set by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
