Certificate Program Admission Requirements

All certificate programs are currently administered at the department level.

Students working toward a certificate must be admitted to the University of Idaho as either a nondegree-seeking student or as a degree-seeking student. (Please refer to the University of Idaho General Catalog for details). All students must meet the minimum graduate admission requirements to enroll in 500-level courses for a certificate.

Up to 12 approved credits taken as a non-degree student may be transferred into a graduate program. Students considering transferring credits into a graduate program must contact their departments for early advising.

Certificate Programs

Certificates are ideal for students and professionals who are not able to complete the BS or MS degree, but who want a basic understanding of techniques and applications within a specific discipline. Certificates can be particularly useful, because success in the modern workplace requires knowledge and insights that cross traditional disciplinary bounds. Certificates allow students to concentrate on particular fields of direct relevance to their current careers.

Three classic examples:

Here are three great examples of certificate programs available through the University of Idaho College of Graduate Studies.

One example is the GIS Certificate Program, which is designed to serve students and professionals who are not able to complete the BS or MS degree who want a basic understanding of techniques and application potential of geographic information systems (GIS). GIS is the computer technology that uses digital information about earth-surface features and location patterns to produce useful maps and analytical solutions to complex problems in physical, environmental, social and economic sciences.

Another example is the 12-credit Entrepreneurship Certificate, an interdisciplinary program featuring an integrated curriculum that fits well with a number of college majors. Students learn the technical knowledge and skills in their major area of study and acquire the necessary business skills and knowledge for business planning.

Yet another great example is the Water Science Certificate, an entirely Web-based program developed for professionals who have already completed a college degree and are working in areas that deal with environmental issues and resource management. This certificate program can also be used to introduce prospective students to a potential graduate degree program.
