Undergraduate Research

Regardless of which College of Natural Resources (CNR) program you choose, we believe research is a fundamental component of your educational experience. By participating in a wide range of research activities on campus and in the wilderness, you’ll be more engaged and informed about current natural resource topics. You’ll also be equipped with a better understanding of the science that underpins sustainable management of our natural landscapes.

As an undergraduate, your research experience could include:

  • Community service projects
  • Working with a professor or graduate student on special research projects during the school year
  • Volunteering with local nonprofit groups on restoration projects

The Student Grant Program

As an undergraduate student, you may be paid to conduct research with a faculty member or university-affiliated professional. The Student Grant Program (SGP) offered by the university provides funding for University of Idaho student-led research, scholarly and creative activities. The SGP is funded from university student fees. Research grants are awarded to allow students the opportunity to fund and conduct their own projects. Awards may be used to publish, present or otherwise recognize student work. The SGP funding process is designed to give undergraduate students experience with professional-level grants.

Applicants experience:

  • Proposal writing
  • External peer review of proposals
  • Working with university financial technicians
  • Presenting their work to the university
  • Providing final reports on their projects
