My research is focused on the genetic and field-based monitoring of the endangered Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit reintroduction. The historically isolated Columbia Basin lineage is being supplemented with pygmy rabbits from other regions, and I am developing and testing genetic tools to monitor the success of the reintroduction as a whole and examine survival, reproduction, and dispersal in terms of ancestry. I am developing and optimizing a set of microsatellite loci and evaluating the use of non-invasive genetic sampling of fecal pellets for future monitoring of individual released rabbits and their offspring. I am also using field-based telemetry to track the initial post-release movements of released rabbits.
