Beyond Brick & Mortar
THE PROJECT
Faculty members team up to expand learning opportunities for traditional and nontraditional students, creating a sophisticated online presence for the College of Natural Resources (CNR).
THE IMPACT
To identify strategies and apply technologies to promote the most effective online learning experience possible. CNR scientists Tim Link, Ron Robberecht, Edwin Krumpe and other collaborators across the university, sought and received funding from the Idaho State Board of Education to investigate the effectiveness of state-of-the-art lecture capture technology (LCT). The team is looking to see how new equipment and technologies can be applied to help faculty facilitate Web-based courses. The CNR team will focus on whether LCT improves student performance and mastery in technically challenging courses with lecture, lab and field components. They also will determine the efficiency of LCT for capturing and delivering impromptu presentations for outreach to key stakeholder audiences.
THE VISION
Through their efforts they are now producing computer-based materials to enhance the learning outcomes of on- and off-campus courses and outreach activities. As part of the project, faculty can now take advantage of the new sate-of-the-art LCT system. This system simultaneously videotapes the lecture presentation and the computer-based learning materials as they are presented in the classroom. Then they automatically and immediately prepare the captured presentations for output to the Internet, mobile devices and or CD/DVD media. The team believes that new LCT technology has great potential to transform the learning environment and the teaching and learning opportunities for a sizable student population, while substantially reducing the production costs.
Long-term outcomes include increasing enrollment in distance and continuing education courses, increasing student performance and retention in on-campus courses, and networking with faculty and professionals throughout Idaho and beyond.
