Payette Lake McCall Field Campus

Facilities & Services

The University of Idaho McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) is located on the shore of Payette Lake and within the boundaries of Ponderosa State Park.  As Idaho's ONLY publicly operated K12 outdoor school, MOSS offers a one-of-a-kind learning experience for youth, graduate students, teachers and the community.  When there are no Residential Programs occurring, MOSS is open to educational groups who would like to hold workshops, seminars and courses in the McCall area.  MOSS is a rustic, limited service rental facility, much like a state park campground. We will do our very best to accommodate guest needs given our resources.  We do not guarantee the level of service one might expect at a large hotel or conference facility.  Guests can expect clean accommodations and delicious food service; residing guests should expect self check-in and overall self-reliance.  Contact us today to see if we have space for your group.

Our campus offers bunkhouses, cabins and yurts for groups in a scenic, unique and rustic retreat setting. From August through May, we typically can accommodate 112 people. In June and July, we typically can accommodate 148 people.

Food Service
The cozy main lodge, complete with beamed ceiling, stone fireplace and a view of the lake, seats up to 60 people for meals. Home cooked meals are served buffet style with a diverse salad bar at lunch and dinner - Sample Menu. Our professional food service staff provides healthy, nutritious meals for residential guests that...
  1. Are high in protein with vegetarian options.
  2. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  3. Are as locally sourced as possible with minimal packaging.
  4. Minimize sugars and trans fats.
We can accomodate those with food allergies given advanced notice.  If you have specific questions about feeding those with allergies or other questions about the food service, please contact our food service manager Brian Brooks.

Meeting space

The classroom is centrally located on the campus and provides a view of the lake.  It accommodates groups up to 60 people. Two meeting yurts are available and can accommodate groups up to 30. An outdoor meeting area is available for warm, sunny days.  There is also a large amphitheater area complete with lake view and fire pit.  Please bring your own meeting supplies right down to tape, scissors, pencils, dry erase markers, flip chart paper, etc.  When the main office is open (no regular weekend hours), you can purchase copies -- $0.10 a black and white copy and $0.25 a color copy.

The 14-acre campus features 600 feet of lakefront beach. Ponderosa State Park borders MOSS and offers splendid hiking, Nordic skiing, mountain biking, nature trails, boat ramps, trailer hook-ups, a wide variety of evening interpretive programs and more. Access to Payette National Forest is just a short drive from MOSS up Lick Creek Road or Warren Wagon Road.
