DEAN, COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

Dean's Welcome

Dear Friends,

Today’s College of Natural Resources grew from a diverse lineage that created lasting legacies. It all began in 1909 when Charles Houston Shattuck arrived to serve as head of the new Department of Forestry in the College of Agriculture. Considered something of a fad at the time, the fledgling department began life with one professor and 11 students. A century later, the college's 58 faculty members, many of them among the most respected in their fields, address a broad spectrum of renewable natural resource concerns in their teaching, research and outreach.

I invite you to join us in celebrating 100 years of forestry education, honoring the seedling traditions, innovations and programs whose roots established today’s diverse natural resource science and management college. Our kick off celebration, the first of several events leading up to our centennial anniversary in 2017, occurs Sept. 11-13 on the Moscow campus. Many of CNR’s natural resource leaders will gather, and former U.S. Forest Service Chief Bosworth will deliver a defining presentation entitled, “Our Legacy of the Past Leads Us Into the Future.” We then will engage in discussions among current students, faculty and alumni regarding the natural resource challenges we face as we move into the next 100 years. We’ll also offer a series of field trips as well as opportunities to socialize and celebrate good memories and friendships. We look forward to seeing you at this benchmark celebration!

Sincerely,

Dr. William McLaughlin
