2:30 p.m. | CNR Teaching, Research, and Outreach in the 21st Century – Our Next 100 Years
CNR Faculty and graduate students will focus on changes in teaching, research and service as we look ahead to create the next generation of leaders. Themes include: our evolving environmental law and policy challenges; structural changes in the forest products industry; water – a valuable ecosystem service; the future of geospatial sciences landscape genetics and endangered species; conservation leadership; emerging directions in public land management; restoration of rangeland ecosystems; fire in our  landscape; parks and protected areas in the 21st century; biofuels and biomaterials from the forest and rangelands of tomorrow; regeneration of our native plants, forests, and arid lands as we respond to climate change; the outlook for our fisheries resources; and other topics.

Optional tours will occur at various time during the day.

9:00 a.m. | Two field trips and golf will be five to six-hour events, returning between 2-3 p.m.  These trips have a charge as indicated on the registration form, and include lunch.

  • University Experimental Forest ($25) – led by Professor Penny Morgan, fire ecologist, and Ross Appelgren (For Res ’75), forest manager.  Visits will include sites of recent activities on the forest related to teaching the prescribed burn class, silviculture classes and others; research activities; and partnership activities.   • Mica Creek ($25) – led by Professor Tim Link, forest hydrologist, and others involved in this long-term, forest/watershed research project in cooperation with Potlatch Corp. Sign up for the Mica Creek Tour

Various Times | The following activities will take place on Saturday and have no charge.  We would like those interested to register for these trips so we can gauge the appropriate support for them.  If there is enough interest, most can be repeated once or twice during the day.

  • Franklin H. Pitkin Forest Nursery – led by Professor Anthony Davis.  Tour of the nursery operations and current research projects underway at the Center for Forest Nursery and Seedling Research.  Meet at the Pitkin Nursery on the Troy Highway; 1.5-2 hour tours; 10 a.m. and/or 1 p.m. depending on interest. Teita Reveley Geospatial Education and Research Complex, University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium, Idaho Stable Isotopes Laboratory, Laboratory of Ecological and Conservation Genetics, fish labs, and other points of interest. Optional activity: Join the CNR Student Affairs Council and other student leaders for a service learning project with the Nez Perce Tribe in Lapwai.
Led by Aaron Miles (For. Res. ’96). Transportation will be provided. More information coming soon.
