Tie breaker rules
The WC Manual stipulates as follows:
After the Pool GAmes:
For the pool matches a winner takes 3 points; a draw is worth two and the
loser gets one.
In the event of tied teams in the pools:
- The winner of the match in which the tied teams played goes through, and
failing that
- the team which has scored the most tries in that particular pool match,
and if it is still tied
- the team which has scored the most tries in all its pool matches,
failing which
- the team which has scored the greater number of points in all its pool
games.
- If it is still tied,
the total points scored by each team shall be divided by the total points
scored against it by each team in the foregoing matches. The team with
the higher index shall be the winner; and if that fails to resolve the
matter
- the team with the least number of players sent off in the tournament
shall be declared the winner, or , finally,
- the winner shall be determined by the toss of a coin.
In the quarters, semi's and play-offs:
The toss of a coin shall be used if AFTER 10 minutes extra time each way
and, if it is still drawn, the team with the highest number of tries in the
match will get the nod again depending on the number of players sent off in
the tournament.
In the Finals:
A draw at fulltime will be followed by 10 minutes extra time both ways, and
if after that no winner has emerged, the trophy will go to the team
- Who scored the most tries in the final, or
- The team with the least number of players ordered off during the
tournament, or failing that
- The trophy will be shared.
