Fourteen students from the University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts have been selected to compete for acting scholarships awarded by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
The national theater program will honor 16 students with Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships at $500 each. Students will compete against nominees from 51 regional institutions. Before heading off to the Fort Collins, Colo., competition, they will present their auditions to the Palouse.
The department will host the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Audition Showcase at
7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the UI Hartung Theater. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to cover the travel cost of attending the regional competition.
The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship is named after the late actress who is most known for her role as "Granny Clampett" in The Beverly Hillbillies. The scholarships have been awarded since 1972 to honor student performers looking to further their education.
Nominees were chosen by KCACTF respondents based on performance evaluations during fall productions at UI. Each nominee is required to present two scenes and a monologue during in the regional competition. Scenes and monologues are chosen by the nominee and another student with whom they will partner
About 200 students will participate in the KCACTF Region VII competition held Feb. 13-17. Winners of regional scholarships will be invited to the national festival in Washington, D.C., to compete for two $3,000 scholarships in April.
