Phi Beta Kappa

The College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences is home to the University of Idaho chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society.

The prestigious society, which has more than half a million members and chapters at 276 leading American colleges and universities, promotes and recognizes student excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Invitation to membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a reflection of outstanding achievement.

Election Qualifications

Candidates are nominated for election by their chapters and cannot apply for membership.

To be considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa, students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.90 as juniors, 3.89 as seniors with four semesters at the University of Idaho, or 3.70 as seniors with seven semesters at the University of Idaho. Additionally, they must have fulfilled the following requirements: 16 total semester credits in the humanities and social sciences, with no fewer than 7 credits in each; 10 semester credits in mathematics and natural sciences; and 16 semester credits through the intermediate level or the equivalent (e.g., 4 high school units) in a foreign language.
