A Message from Dean Andrew Kersten

Andrew KerstenWelcome! Thanks for visiting.

It has been my great honor to become the next dean of the College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences. I am a native of Montana, though I have lived most of my life in the Midwest. I am a U.S. historian by discipline, with a research interest in social movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. My undergraduate degree is from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and I earned my graduate degrees at the University of Cincinnati. Among my publications are: A. Philip Randolph: A Life in the Vanguard (2006) and Clarence Darrow: American Iconoclast (2011). Recently, I have returned to Randolph and will publish two books about him in 2015.

I come to the University of Idaho from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where I was a faculty member and later Associate Provost and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. I have a passion for interdisciplinarity, international education, student engagement, and the development of best practices in teaching and learning.

I was drawn to the University of Idaho and to CLASS because of the wonderful faculty and staff, the commitment to student success and achievement, and the fantastic opportunities to develop and grow our academic programs. I am a strong advocate of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. It’s at the core of what we do here at the University of Idaho.

My family and I have been excited to join the university community. Moscow has quickly and rather proudly become our home. I look forward to meeting and working with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters of the College. Go Vandals!
