Strings

The Preparatory Division offers private instruction and group classes in violin, viola, cello, and double bass for students ages 4 and up. We also offer guitar lessons for older students.

Our bowed strings faculty offers both Suzuki instruction with our experienced Suzuki teachers, and traditional non-Suzuki instruction with University of Idaho faculty members. All Preparatory Division strings students have many opportunities to perform, both on campus in the University of Idaho Administration Auditorium and off campus at venues such as the Moscow Farmer's Market.

Preparatory Division strings students are also expected to participate in Suzuki group classes, Cantabile Strings Ensemble, or the Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra. Your teacher will tell you more about the specific class he or she would like you to take. This allows students to have fun working and playing with their peers, in an encouraging, positive environment. Additionally, all Preparatory Division students are expected to play in their school orchestras.

The Preparatory Division strings faculty offer 30-minute, 45-minute and 60-minute weekly lessons. Lesson lengths are determined at the discretion of the faculty member. As a general guideline, students at the level of Suzuki Volume One and Two will have a 30-minute weekly lesson. For students at the level of Suzuki Volume Three and Four, lessons will be 45 minutes. For students playing at a level beyond Suzuki Volume Four, lessons will be 60 minutes.

Our faculty have extensive training in string performance and pedagogy, and are supervised by the Director of Strings, Professor Miranda Wilson. For more information, please contact Professor Wilson: music-prep@uidaho.edu.
