Ying Quartet Performs January 26th

The Grammy-Award winning Ying Quartet plays Moscow on Thursday January 26 on the Auditorium Chamber Music Series at the University of Idaho Auditorium. The Yings, quartet-in-residence at Eastman School of Music, will also teach and perform for schools and community groups while on the Palouse.

The quartet’s performances regularly take place in many of the world's most important concert halls, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. At the same time, the Quartet's belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has also drawn the foursome to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace, schools, juvenile prisons, and the White House. This season, brilliant violinist Ayano Ninomiya joins the three siblings of the Ying Quartet as first violinist.

Their many recordings reflect the Ying Quartet’s wide-ranging musical interests, including exploring the common ground between the classic string quartet tradition and jazz, other American vernacular styles, and traditional Chinese music. Their musical partners over the years have included pianist Menahem Pressler, folk musician Mike Seeger, jazz pianist Billy Childs, and electronic composer Tod Machover.

The Auditorium Chamber Music Series concert by the Ying Quartet includes two works from their LifeMusic Commissioning Project: “Anniversary Dances “by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and Three Rags by pianist-composer John Novacek. In addition, they will perform the monumental String Quartet Op.130 and Grosse Fugue by Ludwig van Beethoven. As part of their residency, the Yings will also teach at the University of Idaho, Moscow Junior High School and the Northwest Children’s Home in Lewiston, will coach the Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra, and perform for younger children at the 1912 Center. The Yings are also the guest coaches for teenage musicians at the 14th annual Palouse Chamber Music Workshop on January 28.

Tickets for the January 26 concert by the Ying Quartet are available at the Prichard Gallery in downtown Moscow and at www.auditoriumchambermusic.org. Ticket prices are $10 for students, $17 for seniors, and $20 for general admission. Details of the Ying’s concert program and their residency are also at the website.
