Housing & Travel

All campers are accompanied by faculty and camp counselors while attending the summer camp. Students are supervised during all classes, meals, activities, etc, and are not allowed to walk across campus without a counselor.

At our residence hall, we have at least one counselor for every 10 overnight students. Our Resident Advisors (RAs) stay overnight in the dorms in a nearby room and will walk with the students when traveling across campus. We have strict policies regarding room hours and quiet time, and all overnight students sign a behavioral agreement at registration. We manage students at all times, but once students are in their rooms for the evening, they are expected to behave maturely and be considerate of their roommates. If you do not feel that your student will work well in this situation, we ask that you speak with them about courtesy and interpersonal expectations before their arrival.

Overnight campers will stay in the Living and Learning Communities (LLC) residence hall, located at the corner of Paradise Creek Street and Line Street. (campus map) Dining facilities are located across the lawn in Wallace Hall.

Students will be accompanied by camp counselors at all times in the residence halls and will be escorted by them when walking across campus to attend LHMC events. It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk from the LLC to the Music Building where most camp events will be held.

The LLC offers two-room suites, connected by a shared bathroom, with double occupancy per room. Each room has bunk beds along with storage space and a window. Each floor has a living space area for students to gather, and the basement houses a recreational area with televisions, games, and computers. Wi-fi is available for campers.

Housing check-in for overnight campers begins at the Living Learning Communities (LLC) between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Sunday. At housing check-in, campers can drop off their belongings in their room. Immediately afterward, one of our Resident Advisors will direct you to the camp check-in desk at the Lionel Hampton School of Music.

All campers will complete their registration for camp at the Lionel Hampton School of Music, where you will receive your camp registration folder. In this packet, there are waivers and a rules packet that must be signed by both parent and student. There is also a schedule overview as well as directions to your first camp event—camper orientation at 12:30. Late arrivals should notify us by email at music@uidaho.edu.

All campers will present a final concert on Saturday in the Administration Auditorium, immediately following a lunch on the Administration Lawn. Family and friends are encouraged to attend both the lunch and concert. It is a wonderful opportunity to see what your student accomplished during the week! Students will be released into parent/guardian care immediately following this concert. Please note that the concert length may change slightly depending on the number of camp attendees and ensembles.

All meals are served at The Eatery at Vandal Village located in Wallace Hall. You can learn more about them, including viewing current menus, on their website.

If your child has a food allergy or dietary request, we ask that you contact us directly in addition to providing the information on our registration form. Our dining hall has daily options for most dietary needs such as vegetarian and gluten-free options, but we would like to make note of any serious allergies before our campers arrive. We are not able to offer a shuttle or ride service from any airport to the campus. Before booking your plane ticket, please plan how your student will get from the airport to campus. Also, be aware that some travel options might not be as readily available on Sunday for arrival and Saturday for departure.

The Moscow/Pullman airport is a 10-minute drive from the UI campus, and is our recommended destination for any camper using air travel. There are taxi and app-based ride options available.

There is a slightly larger airport in Lewiston, ID--a 40-minute drive south of Moscow--as well as a large airport in Spokane WA--approximately a 1 hour and 40 minute drive north of Moscow. The shuttle service from the Spokane Airport to Moscow no longer runs during the summer months, so that is not an option.

If your child is traveling unaccompanied to attend the camp, you must reach out to us in advance. There are multiple forms, including a risk management waiver and a rules policy which must be signed by the parent/guardian of any minor attending camp. You should include this information in the open field at the bottom of your online registration form, but you should also call or email us to confirm after your registration is complete. We would never want a student to feel lost or forgotten!

If a camper intends to drive themselves, we can provide parking for the week, but they will be required to turn over the keys of their vehicle to our camp staff until the end of the week. Even if they are not a minor, they will have no reason to leave camp as all meals and transportation is provided for the week.

We are unable to provide housing for nights other than the listed housing dates, so we recommend that any unaccompanied students arrive and leave on the respective start and end dates of the camp. If this is an issue, please feel free to contact us to see if we can assist you. 

Again, regardless of which option you choose, you should confirm the details with our staff either by email or phone after you have finalized a ticket. If you have questions, feel free to contact us as well.

You may request a roommate, and we will do our best to accommodate your requests. Because of the complication of housing this many students, however, we may not be able to fulfill every request. To request a roommate, please note this in the “Roommate request” box in the online registration form; be sure to include the roommate’s name that they intend to use on their registration. If both students do not request each other, we will not place the students together.

We are not able to pair male and female students in the same room/suite, even with parental permission.

When performing, campers will wear their camp t-shirt and jeans (or other full-length pants.)

We recommend that you bring layers, because while all ensemble rehearsal rooms are air-conditioned, the practice room building is not. In the past, we have had to pivot to outdoor concerts, so it is also possible that we may perform outside. Please bring protection from the sun (e.g. sunscreen, hats, long-sleeve undershirt, etc.).

The camp has a NO PETS POLICY, including times of arrival and departure.
