"Dilemmas of Classification: What Counts as Art?"

Abstract: Is photography art?  Knitting?  Woodworking?  Fashion?  Rochelle Smith and Kristin Henrich will discuss the dilemmas of classification, a subject that extends well beyond libraries.  As our main example, we will be look at the border between art and craft, which may seem clear at first glance but in fact has a complex and convoluted history in western culture, a fact reflected in library classification systems like Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress, both of which were developed in the late 19th Century.

Biography:
Rochelle Smith is an associate professor, reference and instruction librarian and library liaison for humanities and history. 
Kristin Henrich is an assistant professor, reference and instruction librarian and library liaison to the College of Art and Architecture.
