“The Performer as Collaborator: The Process of Commissioning Music”
November 15th
James Reid - Lionel Hampton School of Music
Abstract: Until the 19th century, composers were almost always performers as well. In the late 19th century a dichotomy developed between musicians that were composers and those who were performers. In today's classical music world a performer will often collaborate with a composer in the creation of a new work. I will explore how these collaborations work and I'll play excerpts from three pieces for guitar that I have commissioned.
