Launching the McClure Center

The creation of the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research at the University of Idaho is a cornerstone project in our institution’s willingness to embrace its 120 year legacy of leadership and set new standards of excellence and impact on behalf of those we will serve in the future.

The Idaho State Board of Education approved the renaming of the University of Idaho Public Policy Bureau in 2007. In January of 2008 an advisory committee comprised of University leaders, alumni and friends was established. This group worked to establish the vision for the Center and its feasibility. Events honoring the McClures were held in Washington DC and in Boise, ID. Initial interest visits were made to state, regional and national leaders and an organizing committee laid a foundation for the Center’s future development.

Dr. David Gray Adler is the inaugural director of the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research. He began his duties on Aug. 8, 2010. Adler, who also will be the James A. McClure Professor, is responsible for providing leadership to the interdisciplinary work of the center, plan and implement programs, initiate research projects and seek external funding for center activities. He also holds a joint appointment in the College of Law and the Department of Political Science.

Adler is the recipient of numerous teaching, writing and public service awards. The author and editor of half a dozen books and more than 100 scholarly articles, which have appeared in the leading journals of his field, Adler has lectured nationally and internationally on the Constitution and the Presidency. His scholarly works have been invoked by Republicans and Democrats in all three branches of the federal government. His lectures have been aired on C-span and he has been interviewed by an array of national media, including Fox News, NBC News, CNN, National Public Radio, BBC, the New York Times, Newsweek, Washington Post, Washington times, Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times. Adler earned his B.A. from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah.
