Gary Stubblefield - Alumni Hall of Fame Recipient 2011

Gary Stubblefield attended the University of Idaho as a Navy ROTC student, earning a bachelor’s of science degree in botany in 1969. Upon graduation, he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. Over the course of a 21-year career, he earned numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal Combat V, four Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal and many service medals.

Immediately after graduation from University of Idaho, he completed arduous UDT/SEAL training. He served in many countries and regions as a member and leader of SEAL teams. His career focus was in anti-terrorism activities and underwater operations, including operating small wet submersibles, development of special diving equipment and submarine operations.

While serving, Stubblefield was selected to attend the prestigious Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a master’s degree in political science. He has served in armed combat in three theaters of war during his career.

Stubblefield retired in 1990 and resides in Missoula, Mont. He now provides consultation regarding security management and has become a leading global expert in deterring maritime piracy. He travels globally, initiating security enhancements to safeguard radioactive materials that are attractive to terrorists. His work has resulted in physical security upgrades to more than 250 facilities worldwide. His recent contracts have included developing port and harbor defenses, anti-piracy, security of radiological materials and work with private corporate security, anti-terrorism, counter insurgency and all facets of security management.
