IRT for Youth

Looking for a summer activity designed for children with a knack for theatre? Idaho Repertory Theatre has you covered.

The University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts’ resident professional theatre company has had summer youth camps for years.

Camps cater to specific age groups and follow a variety of themes. See below for information on our spring and summer camps as well as our new event: IRT's first full production of Charlotte's Web!

IRTY presents Charlotte’s Web

Auditions: Saturday, June 16th 1-5 p.m., Shoup Hall (corner of Sixth and Rayburn streets)
Rehearsals: M-F afternoons June 18-July 12 (no rehearsal July 4)
Performances: July 12, 13, 14; 6-7 p.m.
$175 per cast member (due at first rehearsal)

Youth ages 6-18 are invited to audition for the cast of IRTY’s first full production! The cast will work with theatre artists and UI students to create this one-hour musical play and assist in creating sets and costumes. No preparation or experience necessary to audition. Free community performances July 12, 6-7 p.m. (East City Park as part of Moscow’s Children’s Entertainment Series), and July 13 and 14, 6-7 p.m. (outdoor stage at the Hartung Theater.) This production is made possible thanks to financial support from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the City of Moscow.


Summer Drama Camps 

Grades K-3
Acting the Story: Myths from Around the World

Three Sessions: June 11-15 (Workshop A), June 18-22 (Workshop B), June 25-29 (Workshop C)
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of the class play in the Hartung Theater Friday at 5:30 p.m.
$125 per session ($115 if registered by 5/18)

Explore a different world culture each week and create a play based on a myth from that culture. Students will work together to build a play while exploring theatre games, movement, dance, stage combat, rehearsal and performance. Students will collaborate to create and select masks, costumes, scenery and props for the play. Each week is different, so sign as many sessions as you like!



Grades 4-6
Creating a Comic Character (Workshop D)

June 11-15
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of the class work in the Hartung Friday at 5:30 p.m.
$125 ($115 if registered by 5/18)

Explore classic comedy techniques that have their roots in the Commedia dell’arte theatre of the 1500s and are still used in sitcoms today! Learn how actors use theatre games, movement, voice, improv, masks, costumes, props, stock characters and comic situations to create comic characters. Students will create a mask for their character and collaborate to create a comedy sketch for the Friday showcase.

Create a Play Workshop (Workshop E)
June 18-22
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of the class play in the Hartung Theater Friday at 5:30 p.m.
$125 ($115 if registered by 5/18)
Experience the theatrical process from beginning to end. Students will work creatively and collaboratively to write, stage, design and rehearse a play to be performed at the Friday showcase. Come explore being a playwright, director, designer and actor all in one week!

Backstage at the Theater: Design Workshop (Workshop F)
June 25-29
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of class work in the Hartung Theater Friday at 5:30 p.m.
$125 ($115 if registered by 5/18)

Explore how scenery, costumes, lighting and make-up are created for a play. Visit the costume shop, scene shop and lighting booth of the Hartung Theater and see in-progress designs for IRTY’s production of Charlotte’s Web. In the design studio, students will read and discuss a script then create a costume design, make-up design, set design model and scenic rendering inspired by the play. Artwork will be presented at the showcase.



Grades 7-9
Acting Techniques: Improv Workshop (Workshop G)

June 11-15
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of class work in the Hartung Friday at 5:30 p.m.
$125 ($115 if registered by 5/18)

Practice the art of improvisation using theatre games, skits and team-building exercises to create
theatre on the spot! Learn the tools and techniques of the actor through exploration of character, voice and movement. Students will create comic skits and scenarios to be performed at the Friday showcase.

Play Devising Workshop (Workshop I)
June 25-29
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. plus a showcase of the class play in the Hartung Theater Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Become part of a creative ensemble working together to experience the play creation process! Learn how to use the power of theatre to tell your own story or express your ideas. Students will use theatre games, improvisation and their own personal experiences to create a group performance piece to be shared at the Friday showcase.



Preschool (Ages 3-6)
Parent and Me Drama Discovery (Workshop J)
Mondays 10-11 a.m. — July 9, 16, 23, 30
$25 per child for four classes

Come enjoy creative play with your child! Play theatre games, sing, dance, dress-up and take part in bringing a children’s story to life. Every child is encouraged to explore imagination and invention in a collaborative, fun environment that encourages self-expression, body awareness and working together.
