Rigging Racket - Sights and sounds from the Hartung Theater
Please enable Javascript to view this slideshow
Although summer theatre has yet to begin, the Hartung Theater is alive with activity.
“Does anyone need anything from the hardware store?” asks Robby Valliere, clinical assistant professor in sound design and technical direction for the University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts.
It’s a question Valliere has asked frequently the past few days. He and six other certified and trained students from the theatre department have been working since May 21 to update the theater’s rigging equipment for the first time since its construction in 1973. The rigging consists of supports and counterweights that hold up the theater’s lighting and equipment used to fly objects and people across stage.

Looking in the Mirror - Notes from the Artistic Director
The snow on Moscow Mountain has melted, lilacs are in bloom and farmers are plowing the rich fields of the Palouse. Some of those freshly plowed fields will lie fallow—left unsown for a season in order to restore the productivity of the land. Here at Idaho Repertory Theatre, we’re taking a similar approach.
As you may have heard, IRT is taking a break. During our “fallow season” we’ll implement safety upgrades to the Hartung Theatre, review our artistic mission, and raise funds for the future.
Does this mean we’re gone for the summer? Not at all!
Join us for our annual Backstage Barbeque Aug. 10. Check out Idaho Repertory Theatre for Youth summer classes and performances of Charlotte’s Web. And in August, don’t miss Circle Mirror Transformation, the Obie Award-winning script directed by Daniel Haley with performances by Kelly Quinnett, Nancy Lee-Painter, David Lee-Painter and guest artist Rich Brown.
Yes, it’s June on the Palouse. It’s time for Saturday Market, an Arboretum stroll, and Idaho Repertory Theatre -- a summer tradition for nearly 60 years.

We are having an amazing start to our IRTY Summer Programs!
Last week 17 students 5-14 years old participated in our first session of IRTY Summer Camp. Last Friday at 5:30 p.m. our students presented a 30-minute showcase on the Outdoor Stage behind the Hartung Theatre, showing off what they had learned at camp during the week.
The K-3rd grade class spent the week learning about East Africa and presented a play based on an East African Myth called How the Animals Got their Colors, then performed a dance wearing the African animal masks they had made. The 4-6th grade class learned about the roots of comedy, created their own comic characters and devised a play using those characters. Then they designed and created masks to represent those characters. Their fun performance reminded me of an episode of Scooby Doo! The 7-9th grade class spent the week practicing improv skills and devising an inventive play involving scheming servants, badly behaved royalty, kidnapping plots, grabs for power and British accents! They really showed off what they had learned in class!
We just started our second week of summer camp, and this week’s showcase promises to be as fun as last week’s. Our showcase is at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 22 and is open to the public. It is not too late for kids K-9th grades to sign up for the third week of camp, June 25-29 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The K-3rd grade class will be Myths from Around the World, the 4-6th grade class will be Backstage at the Theatre: Design Workshop and the 7-9th grade class will be Play Devising Workshop. Email me at sduval@uidaho.edu for more information.
In other news, today was the first rehearsal of our IRTY all-youth production of Charlotte’s Web. Twenty-two enthusiastic youth ages 6-16 from Moscow and Pullman have been cast in our production. We will have 3 performances from 6-7 p.m., July 12 in East City Park and July 13-14 on the Outdoor Stage behind the Hartung Theatre. Performances are free, so please bring the family and a blanket or lawn chairs and come support the Idaho Repertory Theatre for Youth Company!
