Karen’s faculty experience includes developing and teaching undergraduate courses in writing, literature, American Studies, and year-long Core classes in both the social sciences and humanities. In teaching technical writing, she draws upon more than 15 years of professional experience in the private sector.
Her research experience includes participating as a principal member in interdisciplinary projects funded by the National Science Foundation with scientists and staff from Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories.
As an active member of the Department of English, Karen mentors undergraduate students and teaching assistants, participates in committees to improve undergraduate curriculum and standards for writing proficiency, and is an active voice for cultural diversity, giving presentations both on campus and at the National Council of Teachers Conference on College Composition and Rhetoric. She has also directed a pre-freshman enrichment summer program for underrepresented populations pursuing careers in science, math, engineering, and technology.
