Writing Placement Test

The Writing Placement Test (WPT) is an alternative method at UI of placing you in your composition course. Normally, you are placed into your introductory composition course by any one of the following test scores:

SAT Verbal

ACT English

English 101 with English 109 co-requisite

English 101

English 102

not applicable

These scores are the same at all state institutions throughout Idaho (BSU, ISU, LCSC, NIC, CSI, etc.).

At UI, you are also able to take the UI Writing Placement Test (WPT) if are a student enrolled in English 101+Engl 109, Engl 101 or Engl 102 who feels that that your standardized test scores do not represent your writing abilities.

For enrollment in Fall 2014 courses, the Writing Placement Test will be administered on Tuesday August 25th.  More information will be provided on the first day of your English class.  There is no cost to take this test.

These are the requirements to take the UI Writing Placement Test:
  • You must be enrolled in a section of English 101 or English 102.
  • Bring two pens.
  • Bring a blank blue book (available for purchase at the Vandal Store).

  • English 101+English 109
  • English 101
  • English 102
  • Exempt
Your writing will be evaluated by faculty who teach English 101 and English 102.  They will look at how well you
  • Understand the reading passage;
  • Understand the writing task;
  • Focus your writing;
  • Organize your response;
  • Provide evidence and examples to support your points;and
