Writing Placement Test
The Writing Placement Test (WPT) is an alternative method at UI of placing you in your composition course. Normally, you are placed into your introductory composition course by any one of the following test scores:
SAT Verbal |
ACT English |
English COMPASS |
200-440 |
1-17 |
0-67 |
450-560 |
18-24 |
68-94 |
570-690 |
25-30 |
95-99 |
700-800 |
31-36 |
not applicable |
These scores are the same at all state institutions throughout Idaho (BSU, ISU, LCSC, NIC, CSI, etc.). At UI, you are also allowed to take the UI Writing Placement Test (WPT) if you feel that your placement is incorrect. You must be enrolled in English 095, 101 or 102 to be eligible to take this test. Placement tests will be administered the first week of classes of each semester. There is no charge to take this test. The English department no longer offers an online placement test. You must be enrolled in an introductory composition course to take the test.
Instructors will provide an opportunity for students to take the test the first week of classes. Meeting place and times will be given to students in class and the writing prompt will be given at the testing site. It generally takes about a week to get the results for your essay. You will be notified through your VandalMail when your essay has been scored. If you have been placed in a higher level than what your earlier test scores allowed, you will also have permission to register for that higher-level course. You can then drop the course in which you are currently registered and register for the higher-level course if you want to.
