Dee MalchowDee Malchow

Dee Malchow, MN, RN, is an amputation nurse specialist. She experienced a right below knee amputation at age 19 from a boating accident.
Her Bachelor of Science in Nursing was earned at the University of Washington in 1968. She returned to the UW for a Masters in Psychosocial Nursing in 1992. She continues to serve as a Clinical Associate Faculty member of the UW Biobehavioral Nursing Dept. since 1987.

Over the past 49 years she has interacted with over 3000 amputees through sports (including skiing and soccer), mission work (Sierra Leone), research (Seattle Foot, prosthetic legs, and amputation management) and her previous job as Clinical Nurse Specialist at Harborview Medical Center (34 years). Dee served as the facilitator for the weekly Harborview Amputee Support Group for 22 years and has taught several Peer Visitor Training classes. She has written several related articles with a focus on the emotional impact of limb loss.

Regarding amputee soccer, Dee was a charter member of the original team that began in the Seattle area in 1983. It soon expanded internationally and many Amputee Soccer World Cup tournaments have been held. Dee retired from the game in 1992.

Her mission work in Sierra Leone began in early 2001. An amputee soccer program began from that visit which resulted in five teams and over 150 players throughout the country. They have competed internationally in several countries.
Dee worked with others to expand the outreach to all amputees in that country through Greatest Goal Ministry – USA from 2006 until June, 2009. In May 2009 she co- founded a nonprofit ministry for the disabled women of Sierra Leone called Women of Hope, International (www.WomenofHopeInternational.org).

Dee is married to Jim Malchow, lives in Shoreline, Washington, has a grown son & daughter who are also married and have provided her with eight delightful grandchildren - three girls and five boys.
