First Academic Disqualification

Regulation L

If you are a first semester student and you fail to achieve a 1.0 GPA for the semester, you will be placed on first disqualification. This means that you will be unable to attend the university for one semester. Once the required semester away is complete, you will be eligible to return to the university. You will work closely with your advisor and establish a plan to ensure your academic success during your transition back to school. You can read the full Regulation L language in the course catalog.

If you have significant and documented extenuating circumstances (such as hospitalization records, death certificate of a family member, etc.) you may appeal for immediate reinstatement. If this applies to you, please contact one of the probation advisors below.

If your last name begins with A-M, please contact Lexi Schaar, aschaar@uidaho.edu or 208-885-7765.

If your last name begins with N-Z, please contact Shawna Bertlin, sbertlin@uidaho.edu or 208-885-0712.

First Disqualification

If you are a student who began the term on academic probation and do not achieve a 2.0 GPA for the semester you will be placed on academic disqualification. The university requires that you sit out one semester to help you clarify your academic and personal goals. After the semester away is complete, you will be allowed to return to the university on academic probation and will be required to participate in the CLASS Student Success Program.

If you have significant and documented extenuating circumstances, you may appeal for immediate reinstatement. You will be asked to meet with your probation advisor and have an honest discussion about the reasons you were placed on academic disqualification and to assess your academic and personal goals. Your advisor will work with you to decide if a petition for reinstatement is in your best interest. (It is important to note that a reinstatement petition is not guaranteed to be approved and it must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered).

If a petition for reinstatement is appropriate, you will write a thoughtful letter explaining the reasons for your disqualification and a realistic plan for correcting your status. Items that should be covered:

  • Academic and personal goals
  • Reasons why you did not do well
  • Steps you have taken and will take to ensure this situation will not happen again
  • Campus resources you will use
  • How many hours do you work per week
  • Your plans if your petition does not pass

If you are granted reinstatement, you will be required to participate in the CLASS Student Success Program and meet regularly with your probation advisor who will monitor your academic progress.

If your last name begins with A-M, please contact Lexi Schaar,aschaar@uidaho.edu or 208-885-7765.

If your last name begins with N-Z, please contact Shawna Bertlin, sbertlin@uidaho.edu or 208-885-0712.

Note: The Registrar’s Office will drop students from their next semester’s classes if those students on academic disqualification are not reinstated by the deadline.
