Rotary Student of the Month (March 2012)

Nancy Larsen was born and raised in Kellogg and moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1986.  Her story is unique in that she will soon hold four degrees from the University of Idaho.  She earned her Bachelor's degree in 1991 in elementary education and then continued to earn a Master's Degree in 1995, an Education Specialist Degree in 2001, and will graduate with a PhD in Educational Leadership in May.  In 1999 she achieved National Board Certification as one of two initial teachers from the Coeur d'Alene School District.  She proudly represented Idaho as the Teacher of the Year in 2000.

In 2001 she started Growing Idaho's Future Teachers, GIFT Corporation, to encourage high school students to choose teaching as a career.  In 2003 and 2004 she served as president of the Idaho Council of the International Reading Association where she successfully brought the Idaho Reading Conference to Coeur d'Alene.  Among her honors are a recent Alumni Award for Excellence from the University of Idaho and the Marsha Nakamura Award for Teaching Excellence.  Nancy currently teachers for the Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy as a 6th grade teacher and as an adjunct faculty for the University of Idaho's Educational Leadership graduate program.  She hopes her PhD will benefit Idaho's children in the future.
