UI Coeur d’Alene Graduate Career Profile – Nicole Preece, Organizational Science

Nicole Preece loves working as a marketing consultant in her hometown of Coeur d’Alene.

“I get to work with amazing people every day. I enjoy working with my clients and finding them solutions that will drive them results. I get to be creative, innovative, a student, a teacher, a professional, and a leader.”

Nicole’s worked as a digital marketing consultant and business development professional since she graduated from UI Coeur d’Alene with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Science in 2012.

Nicole Preece describes her experience balancing family life and education.

She said she chose to major in Organizational Science because it was important to her to gain leadership skills in the business world. Nicole liked the idea that her degree would draw from business, industrial/organizational psychology, public administration, industrial sociology and other disciplines that would give her an understanding of interpersonal workplace dynamics.

“It was so important to me to find a career here in my hometown. There are so many people that grow up here and leave to pursue a career.” Not only did Nicole find a great career here, she was able to complete her bachelor’s degree without uprooting her young family.

A first generation college student, Nicole found she had to navigate the college process without a lot of help from experienced family members. Soon after graduating from Coeur d’Alene High, Nicole began attending North Idaho College for her associate’s degree – all while juggling her duties as an at-home mom of a toddler and an infant. It didn’t take her too long to realize she’d have to put in a little more studying to get the dream job she wanted.

“I was not having much success finding a job with just the two-year degree, and I was looking for a career,” says Nicole.

At the time, UI Coeur d’Alene was offering a new degree program in Organizational Science that matched Nicole’s career ambitions as well as worked around her schedule as a busy mother.

Nicole found out through her educational journey that following through on her commitment to get a degree was not going to be easy.

“You can dream all you want, but it takes hard work, determination, and sacrifice to make it happen,” she admits.

There were many nights that turned into early mornings when Nicole said she stayed up until 3 a.m. doing research papers, or reading/studying, after a long day of taking care of kids and housework.

“It was a lot harder to stay focused on school the older I got and the more life responsibilities that I had. Learning how to balance it all was definitely a challenge, but worth every bit of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment in the end,” said Nicole.

“I am very close to my family and my daughters, Jaden 14, and Hanna 8 are my driving force. Between soccer practices, school activities, taxi driver for teenagers, and my career, I am a busy girl.”

In her free time, Nicole’s family enjoys Northern Idaho outdoor activities like hiking, camping, skiing and events. Nicole also enjoys doing volunteer work through Rotary club, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Of course, she hasn’t ruled out the thought of a master’s degree – also possible through UI Coeur d’Alene. Nicole adds, “My love of learning will never go away and I will forever be a student in life.”
