If I could give incoming freshman any advice, it would be to get involved in an organization outside of the classroom either on campus or within the local community. Such involvement has been invaluable for me--a key in the success and direction of my four years at the University of Idaho.

A senior in the College of Business and Economics double majoring in Accounting and Finance, I grew up in the small, southern Idaho town of Rupert where I attended Minico High School. Coming to Northern Idaho was a huge adjustment for me, but I saw that change as a way to expand my knowledge and become a more balanced individual because of the many opportunities at the University of Idaho. I found my challenges within several areas on campus, including the Distinguished Sophomores Business Club and the Davis Investment Management Group (the Davis Group). The skills I have gained and the experiences I have had with these organizations have greatly improved my prospects for life after college.

The Davis Group, specifically, has given me the best chance to take what I have learned in the classroom and apply it to real world situations. The group is made up of highly motivated and successful students not only from the College of Business and Economics but from other colleges around campus as well. It manages a portfolio of around $400,000. All decisions are made by the student members, who go through a rigorous and highly competitive recruitment process each February. In managing the portfolio, members are challenged to apply financial theories and give professional investment presentations to the group. This environment creates a test that a student cannot find in the classroom and allows members to showcase their proficiency and skills using financial concepts that will be useful to them even if they do not pursue a career in finance.

Along with managing the portfolio, the Davis Group travels once a year to a financial hub in the United States to meet with industry professionals and executives to find what a career in finance is truly like. The opportunities to expand on financial skills and networking possibilities provided by the Davis Group make it a special chance that few other universities offer. I don’t know of any other place in the Northwest I could have gone to get this kind of real world experience. This knowledge has helped to give me the confidence in my own critical thinking and decision making skills, which in turn has allowed me to succeed in the classroom and in the workplace while interning for the SuperValu Corporation in the summer of 2008 and for the Boeing Company in the summer of 2009.

Not only has the Davis group provided me with experiences working with financial concepts and portfolio management, it has served as the platform to work with other highly motivated and successful students, an experience which will be valuable in my future. Also, the staff involved with the oversight of the Davis Group has been very supportive of the learning experiences gained and I would like to recognize and thank Dr. Brett Olsen for his great work as the advisor to the Davis Group, Associate Dean Dr. Mario Reyes for being so supportive of the group over the years, and the rest of the College of Business and Economics faculty who continue to challenge students in new and interesting ways.

It is with great honor that I will graduate from the University of Idaho in May, and I cannot express how much I appreciate all of the professors I have had at the university. The faculty and staff of the College of Business and Economics has been inspirational in their teaching, and I know that I will take what I have learned here and put it to good use when I start working in the “real world” in June in the finance department of the Boeing Company in Seattle. Without the experiences of the Davis Group, and all of my other activities here on campus, I know that I would not be where I am today, so again, thank you to all who have helped me along my journey here at The University of Idaho.
