Dana Stover 2011 Advising Excellence Award

Dana Stover, Assistant Dean for Recruitment, Retention, and Assessment in the College of Business and Economics, joined the University of Idaho in 1990. She received her Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1991. Since that time, she has been actively involved in all aspects of the student experience. Dr. Stover spent many years teaching in the classroom before taking on the role of Assistant Dean in 2007. As the Assistant Dean for Recruitment, Retention, and Assessment, Dr. Stover interacts with students at all points in their academic career – from college recruitment fairs to commencement.

Dr. Stover officially advises around 60 undergraduate students, but she engages almost all students in the College of Business and Economics at some point during their college career. She is the initial point of contact for new students at recruitment events and on-campus visits, and she enjoys “hearing about their hopes and dreams for college.” To help students realize these aspirations, Dr. Stover has developed a thorough network of student resources across campus: the Career Center, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center, the International Programs Office, and Disability Support Services. Dr. Stover also works closely with probationary students to ensure they receive the support and guidance necessary for success.

Dr. Stover is committed to the professional development of faculty and staff advisors across campus. She is an active member in the UI-ACADA, a consistent attendee of the UI-ACADA brown bag seminars, and a frequent presenter at the Annual Advising Symposium. Within the College of Business and Economics, Dr. Stover is a great advising asset for both faculty and professional advisors. Dean Jack Morris describes Dr. Stover as “the ‘go to’ person in our college for questions about curriculum, requirements, deadlines and the myriad of knowledge necessary to guide students on a successful journey through our university.”

Robb Haydon, a current student in the College of Business and Economics, writes that Dr. Stover “is an excellent advisor, knowledgeable about a great many majors and about composing a college plan for students that fits their needs and aspirations.” He also states, “We are lucky to have Dana as our advisor in CBE. I honestly don’t know how I would have gotten as far as I have without the help and support she has given me.”

Dr. Stover is also the proud advisor to the Distinguished Sophomores Business Club, which helps second-year students identify opportunities within the university and the wider business world.

In the words of London Miller, a senior accounting major, Dr. Stover is “an inspiration to many students, including myself.”
