CBE Grads in the Workforce: Brian Shurtliff

Thousands of students have received degrees from the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics (CBE). Our alumni are leaders in business organizations around the country and the world.

Last spring, we asked some of our soon-to-be graduates to describe their CBE experience and to tell us about their plans following their May 2008 graduation. These are their stories.

Please contact us at cbe@uidaho.edu and let us know where you are and what you are doing.

Brian Shurtliff
Schweitzer Engineering, International Human Resource Specialist

"My career will begin as an international human resource specialist for Schweitzer Engineering. I found the most beneficial skills learned while participating in the College of Business and Economics program was research and group dynamics. Through this experience, I gained an understanding of the intricacies of research in the business field and learned to be creative and bold in looking for clues between the lines. Today, I use those same skills to research international solutions that effect real people and solve real problems, solutions that five years ago, I would have immediately dismissed as too difficult.

"The Integrated Business Curriculum (IBC) taught me why group dynamics are significant and how to respond to potentially debilitating situations so that everyone can do a job well done. I learned through many experiences how to correctly respond to a person with a different personality, idea, or work ethic to create a solution that is beyond what could be accomplished individually. Because of IBC I valued conflict and different opinions instead of avoiding it."
