2010 Spring Executive Speaker Series

The Jack Morris Executive Speaker Series brings top business leaders from companies throughout the region to the University of Idaho. These seasoned professionals speak about relevant business issues and provide important career inspiration and advice for our students. The executives generally donate their time, expertise and travel to and from the university.

The Chair in Business Enterprise Fund supports the Executive Speaker Series. The fund provides for the coordination of the series, provides for meals with students and executives, and provides for other support needed to deliver the series.

The students, faculty, administrators and staff of the College of Business and Economics are grateful for the Chair in Business Enterprise Fund and for the executives who share with us their valuable time and knowledge.
April 26 - Phillips Baker
Phillips S. Baker, Jr., is Hecla Mining Company’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Baker joined Hecla in May 2001 as Chief Financial Officer, was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer in November 2001 and CEO in May 2003. Mr. Baker holds JD and MBA degrees from the University of Houston and an accounting degree from Texas A&M University. He is a Certified Public Accountant and is licensed by the Texas Bar. He has over two decades of experience in the mining industry, having previously worked for Battle Mountain Gold Company and Pegasus Gold Inc. as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Baker is past President of the Silver Institute, a national organization of silver producers, sits on the Board of Directors for the National Mining Association and is active in the Northwest Mining Association. Mr. Baker also serves as a director for Questar, a publicly traded energy company, and is a board member for the Boy Scouts of America Inland Northwest Council #611.
April 12 - Brad Rogers
Brad is a 22 year veteran of the plastics and packaging industry after earning his degree in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He spent much of his career working for major polyolefin manufacturers in Texas and Delaware where he developed polymers for use in numerous packaging applications. He is the R&D Manager of Sustainable Packaging and Advanced Materials Research for Frito Lay where his responsibilities include the development of next generation packaging materials that will have a better overall impact on the environment. Brad has eight patents for various packaging applications and at least six more pending. He has authored or co-authored several papers and published articles in the area of barrier food packaging. He is working on the development of advanced barrier technologies for bio-based packaging.
March 29 - Bruce Budge
Bruce Budge is a Senior Managing Director of FTI Consulting, Inc. Mr. Budge graduated of the University of Idaho in 1974, and is a third generation graduate of UIdaho. He is professionally credentialed as a Certified Public Accountant. He entered public accounting with Arthur Andersen in Seattle in 1976. In 1979, he joined K2 Corporation, a manufacturer of snow skis and sporting goods, and eventually became Controller of the company. In 1982, Mr. Budge rejoined Andersen and in 1987 began to practice in the litigation consulting division as well as continuing his involvement in Andersen’s audit practice. He became a partner in 1990 and was division head for the Economic and Financial Consulting Division in the Seattle office until 1999, when he became the Office Managing Partner in the Boise office. Upon the demise of Anderson in 2002, Mr. Budge became Office Managing Partner of a new Boise office of KPMG. In 2003, KPMG sold its litigation support practice to FTI. Mr. Budge has testified in numerous commercial litigation matters over the last 20 years on damages quantification and financial reporting issues, including accounting malpractice defense assignments.
March 8 - Linda Swanstrom
Linda has over seventeen years of experience with HP and brings a wealth of Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) related experience as well as a customer and solutions focus to her role. During her career with HP she has held marketing positions in each of IPG’s key commercial focused businesses. She has been involved in working with and developing both HP and third party solutions components and strategies including certification of key solutions, document capture strategies, and the development of the award winning HP LaserJet 4345 MFP. Prior to joining HP, Linda served as a CPA in the state of Oregon as well as holding Director of Finance positions in both government and private sector businesses. Linda holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and a BS in Accounting from University of Idaho. Linda is based out of Boise, Idaho.
March 1 - Bryan Timm
Mr. Timm joined Columbia in June 1997 as Corporate Controller and was named Chief Financial Officer in July 2002. In 2003 Mr. Timm was named Vice President, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer. In May 2008 he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer and named Executive Vice President in October 2008. Prior to joining Columbia, Mr. Timm held various financial positions with Oregon Steel Mills from 1991 to 1997, rising to Divisional Controller for CF&I Steel, Oregon Steel Mills' largest division. From 1986 to 1991, Mr. Timm was an accountant with KPMG LLP. Mr. Timm is a member of the Board of Directors of Umpqua Holdings Corporation and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. He is also a member of the College of Business and Economics Advisory Board for the University of Idaho.
March 1 - Tom Cusick
Mr. Cusick joined Columbia in September 2002 as corporate controller and was named vice president and corporate controller in March 2006. He was promoted to vice president finance, chief financial officer, and treasurer in January 2009. Prior to joining Columbia, Mr. Cusick held various financial management positions with Cadence Design Systems from 1995 to 2002, (and OrCAD, a company acquired by Cadence in 1999), which operates in the electronic design automation industry. From 1990 to 1995, Mr. Cusick was an accountant with KPMG LLP. He is a certified public accountant.
February 22 - Annette Elg
Annette Elg is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the J. R. Simplot Company. Ms. Elg joined Simplot in 1989 and has held various positions during her 20 year career including Vice President and Corporate Controller and Vice President and Controller for the Food Group. She was appointed to her current position in 2002. Prior to joining Simplot Ms. Elg spent ten years with the Boise office of Arthur Andersen LLP. Ms. Elg is a 1978 graduate from the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics and has completed the Executive Program at Amos Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. She is currently serving as a Board member for the Idaho Community Foundation. Ms. Elg is an Idaho native.
