Accredited by the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) of America, the PGA Golf Management program at the University of Idaho is one of 20 programs of its kind in the nation and the only PGA Golf Management program in the Northwest. The PGA Golf Management program prepares you to transform your passion for golf into an exciting professional career in the dynamic golf industry. The five-year program is offered in the College of Business and Economics as an option of the Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing.


Through engaging classroom studies, quality internship experience and player development programs, you will build the in-depth knowledge, high skill level, on-the-job experience and professional networks you need to succeed in today’s competitive golf industry. Specifically, you will learn about:

  • Rules of golf
  • Tournament operations
  • Golf cart fleet management
  • Golf club design and repair
  • Teaching golf and analysis of swing
  • Business planning and operations
  • Customer relations
  • Supervising and management
  • Turfgrass management

The 18-hole golf course at the university will give you an opportunity to practice your game and improve your playing ability, a vital proficiency when seeking membership in the PGA of America.


As a student in the College of Business and Economics, you’ll take part in the unique Integrated Business Curriculum. This nationally acclaimed program brings together all business majors, including PGA Golf Management students, during their junior year to address actual business issues for companies such as Boeing, Micron, Starbucks, Columbia Sportswear and Coldwater Creek. The curriculum will strengthen your teamwork and decision-making skills. You’ll develop cross-functional business knowledge and you'll gain realistic experience in business systems, product and process planning, managing firm resources and business operating decisions.

Prepare for Success

Is golf your passion? Do you want to turn your love for the game into an exciting career? The PGA Golf Management program at the University of Idaho could be for you. To be admitted into the competitive five-year program, you must be a skilled golfer with a handicap of 12.0 or under and be in good academic standing. Since player ability is of high importance for membership in the PGA of America, we encourage potential students to play in a Playing Ability Test (PAT) event prior to coming to campus.


Your First Year

The University of Idaho PGA Golf Management program consists of the following components:

  1. Completion of the College of Business and Economics curriculum for a Bachelor of Science in Marketing
  2. Minimum of 16 months of compensated co-op/internship experience
  3. PGA Golf Management Program
  4. PGA Playing Ability Test

You will complete general university requirements and introduction PGM courses during your first year of the five-year program. You may take:

  • Intro to Business Profession
  • Public Speaking
  • Intro to College Writing
  • Algebra
  • Intro to Professional Golf Management

Opportunities

The golf business is a rapidly growing multi-billion dollar industry. The Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) of America has more than 26,000 members who manage the daily operations of 20,000 golf facilities around the world. Additionally, the growth of the PGA tour over the last decade has resulted in a dramatic increase in the game’s popularity, as well as a high demand for PGA-trained professionals who have the specialized skills and knowledge to work in this exciting industry.

As a graduate of one of only 20 PGA Golf Management programs in the nation, you’ll have specific work experience, an accomplished resume and a professional network to propel you toward an exciting career in the game you love. Graduates are hired in traditional green grass professional roles at public facilities, private country clubs and resorts. They also hold administrative positions in the PGA, the American Junior Golfers' Association and other tournament associations.


Current Research

Faculty members in the University of Idaho PGA Golf Management program are engaged in field research in golf operations, human resource management, and golf instruction. You will have opportunities to learn from, and to work alongside, these field experts.

Activities



Hands-On Experience

University of Idaho Golf Course : Practice your game and improve your playing ability on the 18-hole, university-owned golf course located on campus. The 6,700-yard, par 72 course offers a unique and beautiful layout that challenges even the most skilled golfers. Practice facilities include:

  • Full service golf range
  • Practice putting green
  • Short-game practice facility
    • Chipping/Pitching
    • Bunkers
    • Mid-range tees (100-40 yards)


Internships: A major component of the PGA Golf Management program is the required 16 months of co-op/internship experience. Our professional contacts and industry connections will ensure that you have access to quality, on-the-job experience on some of the best golf courses in this region. Our students have also interned at the U.S. Open, Masters, and Ryder Cup events.

Integrated Business Curriculum: The College of Business and Economics is an innovative approach to learning that brings together all business majors during their junior year. Students work as part of an interdisciplinary team to address actual business issues.

Stover’s Deli: A partnership with Sudexho Dining Services allows students to practice the ideas they are learning in hospitality management.


Faculty Involvement

Course work specific to PGA Golf Management (PGAGM) is taught by the program director and internship coordinator, who are both Professional Golf Association (PGA) members. In addition, they have both also obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in the business field.
