Group Advising

What happens in a Group Advising Session?

Group advising sessions are given by our advising specialists, Karen Gillespie and Debbie Moos, and they are limited to no more than eight students. These sessions are held in the J. A. Albertson Building. Sessions typically last about one hour. These sessions are designed to help you:

  • Understand the different courses and major options available to you.
  • Learn your role in understanding college policies and requirements.
  • Learn the requirements to enter upper-division courses in the College of Business and Economics.
  • Learn about the different services and resources available on campus.
  • Feel confident with course choices to complete your major.

What are the benefits of Group Advising?

Generally, group advising can be more beneficial than an individual advising session because the intent is to get students involved (networking) and begin a group discussion on many issues. Students benefit directly, because many subjects are brought up by students, which doesn't usually occur in an individual appointment. The group setting is relaxed, students open up, and more information is shared.

How should I sign up for Group Advising?

Call to set up your advising appointment. Refer to STEP 6 on the main Current Student Advising instructions. Appointments cannot be made by e-mail.

What should I do before Group Advising?

Read through the step-by-step instructions covered in the Current Student Advising instruction page.

Am I required to attend a Group Advising session?

No, but with the high volume of students that must be seen before registration begins, it may be your only option. If you need additional assistance, you are welcome to schedule an individual appointment with us after we have met during a group appointment.

Students are always welcome to visit the advising office Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 5:00 p.m.

What if I forget my appointment?

You will have to call and reschedule.

What if I come unprepared to my appointment?
