Freshmen/New Students

Welcome to the College of Business and Economics. Below is a step-by-step guide to assist you with selecting courses and registering online. Please read this information thoroughly.

We do not expect you to register for every class listed below. We suggest registering for 12 to 16 credits. However, you must register for Math, English, and Core Discovery courses first semester for sequential purposes.

Follow the steps below to select and register for classes:

Step 1
Review and/or print the sample registration plan. Suggested courses during the freshman year.

Step 2
Print off a blank registration worksheet. Used to draft your schedule.

Step 3
Select math course.
  • The math sequence is based on your SAT/ACt test scores. Refer to the math placement chart. Your sequence could look like: Math 108, Math 143, Math 160 & Stat. 251. However, a higher test score will eliminate some of these courses. If you have a choice between Math 143 and Math 130 select Math 143.
  • Challenging math placement  If you're not satisfied with your ACT/SAT test scores and want to place higher in math consider taking the COMPASS test.
  • Polya Mathematics Learning Center (Math 108 & Math 143)

Step 4
Select English course.

Step 5
Note: If you have AP and college transfer credit, bring this to our attention because it may change the social science and humanities requirement. Otherwise, follow Step 5.

Select Core Discovery (CD) course, CORE 103-119. All entering freshmen are required to take two semesters of CD courses in their freshman year. These courses will meet social science and humanities core requirements. Be sure to pick a CD course that is social science (SS) fall semester and humanities (H) spring semester, or vice versa.

Transfer this course to your registration worksheet.

Step 6
Other course choices:

  • COMM 101: Fundamentals of Public Speaking, 2 credits(cr)
  • BUS 100: The Business Profession (1 cr)

  • Free electives: for example, physical education (PEB), foreign language, or any other classes that interests you for 1 - 3 credits.

Transfer course(s) to your registration worksheet.

Step 7
Find your selected courses on the Web CLASS SCHEDULE (login is not required), click appropriate semester (Fall/Spring), All Courses. Look up each course that you have selected. Add class registration number (CRN), days and time information to your registration worksheet. The CRN is the unique number for each class that is input during the registration process.

Courses can be found using the same abbreviations listed above (example: math = MATH, English = ENGL). Be sure you select courses that do not create a time conflict.

Days are listed as MTWRF, and R refers to Thursday. For example, if you see TR, this means the course is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Your registration worksheet should now be completed.

Step 8
You will not be able to register until your adviser's hold has been removed. E-mail the list of courses you selected to Debbie Moos or Karen Gillespie. Once your schedule is approved, your adviser's hold will be removed and you can register for classes. Adviser holds are generally removed within 24 hours.

Each semester, students must meet with their academic adviser to review classes before the adviser's hold is removed. Once the hold is removed, you will be able to register at the appropriate schedule time.

Step 9
You are now ready to register, login required. Detailed instructions can be found at Vandal Account Set-up. To log in you will need your ID# (example: 052-99999). This was provided to you from the Admission's Office. You will also need your PIN#. Initially your PIN number will be your birthday, but the year will be zero zero (example: mmdd00). You will be asked to change your PIN number. Change it to something you will remember and/or write it down. After you are logged in, click Student Information/Registration Menu, Registration Menu, Add/Drop Classes, select correct term (Fall/Spring). You should be looking at the registration menu with slots to input the CRN numbers. Type in the CRN numbers and click Submit.

The screen will refresh, scroll down to look at entire screen. The system will display your registered classes. If a class has already met its enrollment limit, you will be given an option to add yourself to the wait list. You must click Submit again to be added to a wait list. The system will NOT automatically add you to a wait list.

IMPORTANT WAIT LIST INFORMATION. The last three columns on the Web class schedule provide enrollment information - Max Enroll, Current Enroll, and Open Seats. Once students have begun to register, classes will begin to fill up and the Wait List option becomes available. When possible, choose classes that have open seats (these numbers update once every night; therefore, they may not be accurate during the day). When a class becomes full the Open Seats column will give you the number of students on the wait list. You can put yourself on multiple wait lists for the same class to increase your odds of getting into the class. The computer does not automatically put you on a wait list. You must choose this option from the Registration Screen, on the pull down menu. Select Wait List and click Submit again. Be careful that you do not create any time conflicts when adding yourself to wait lists. Sometimes it becomes necessary to add yourself to a non-wait listed course to achieve full-time status. In other words, add any class to have at least 12 credits while at the same time adding yourself to wait lists. If the wait listed class gets added to your schedule, you can go back and drop the extra class so that you don't have too many credits.

How do you know if you get added to a wait list? The computer will automatically generate an e-mail to your VandalMail account letting you know you were added. Or, you can check your registration schedule to see if it has been added.

NOTE: PINs will become automatically disabled when the combination of the USER ID and PIN are incorrectly entered five times. If you get locked out click Reset PIN.

Step 10
Print your registration schedule. After you have completed Step 8, go back to the Registration menu (you will still be logged in) and select Student Schedule by Day and Time. This will display your weekly schedule and also indicate if you have created any time conflicts in your schedule. If you have time conflicts, you will have to go back and select a different time/days for the appropriate classes.

You have now completed the registration process. Please contact Debbie Moos at 208-885-5036 or Karen Gillespie at 208-885-6853 if you have any questions. Our toll free number is 800-960-3033.
