Current Students

During your advising sessions, we will review your schedule for the following semester. You will be instructed on how to select courses that meet the University of Idaho and College of Business and Economics (CBE) core requirements. You will learn the importance of which classes must be completed by the end of the sophomore year to be eligible for upper-division CBE courses. Once you become eligible for CBE upper-division courses, you will be assigned a faculty adviser in the area of your major.

Come Prepared to Your Advising Appointment
Read the following information thoroughly and come to your advising appointment prepared. You MUST bring a drafted schedule on the provided Registration Work Sheet. If you do not come prepared you will be asked to reschedule your appointment.

Follow the steps below to prepare yourself for the appointment:

Step 1
Review and/or print the Sample Three Year (Excel document) plan.

Step 2
Print off a blank Registration Work Sheet (Excel document). Use this form to draft your next semester class schedule. You must bring this COMPLETED form with you to your advising appointment.

Step 3
We suggest using a pencil to complete your draft. Write your current classes on the Registration Work Sheet. The easiest way to do this is by accessing your degree audit or Web transcript on the Student Menu after you log in. This will help you determine what is needed the following semester.

Step 4
Using a pencil, create a draft of courses for the upcoming semester on the Registration Work Sheet. (See Advising Tips below.)

FRESHMEN ADVISING TIPS:
  • Continue with the math and English sequence.
  • Core Discovery sequence, continue with course spring semester.
  • Communications 101, 2 credits.
  • Natural science courses. Refer to your Degree Audit for choices.
  • Literature requirement. Refer to your Degree Audit for choices.
  • Humanities and Social Science elective courses. Scroll down until you find the humanities and social science offerings for your catalog year.
  • Free elective credits - these include any classes.
  • Entering freshmen on UI core must complete two semesters of Core Discovery Courses (humanities or social science core requirements). Specifically, if you have entered the UI without any transfer or AP credits you will be on UI core.

Students who have entered the UI with transfer or AP credits may be on State Board Core, which makes the Core Discovery courses optional. To learn if you are on UI Core or State Board Core, refer to your Degree Audit.

SOPHOMORE ADVISING NOTE
The Predictor Course Rule must be met before proceeding to upper division CBE classes (ACCT, BUS, ECON & BLAW).  This rule states that you must complete the predictor courses (accounting 201 & 202, economics 201 & 202 OR 272, business law 265 and statistics 251) and achieve at least a 2.35 predictor GPA.  This GPA is for these courses only.  You must also have junior standing, 58 cumulative credits.  Once you have met the predictor course rule you may begin our upper division sequence of courses (IBC).

Step 5
You cannot set up an appointment through e-mail. Group advising will primarily be used spring semesters. You will receive one reminder phone call. If you miss your appointment, you may reschedule. Call 208-885-7141 to set up an advising appointment. Due to the large volume of students, group advising is necessary and will be the primary source for appointments.

GROUP ADVISING: Students who are on disqualification or probation should not sign up for group advising. Group advising is recommended for students who have a reasonable grasp of their future schedule.

INDIVIDUAL ADVISING APPOINTMENT: If you need additional assistance, you are welcome to schedule an individual appointment with us after we have met during a group appointment. We can review your drafted schedule, Degree Audit and determine the correct courses to be taken. Any questions you have will be answered.

Students are always welcome to visit the Advising Office throughout the semester during office hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Step 6
Bring your drafted Registration Work Sheet and schedule for the following semester. The best self-advising tool is Degree Audit. You can access Degree Audit from the Student Menu after login. We strongly recommend that you review your Degree Audit report every semester. The more you use it, the more helpful it becomes.

To create a schedule by day and time use the Class Schedule.  If the semester you are looking for is not listed, it is because it is not yet available.  You will need to check the link regularly to learn when it becomes available.

If you come to your appointment unprepared, you will have to reschedule.

Step 7
View the registration schedule for the date you can begin to register, based on your credit level, i.e., senior, junior, sophomore, or freshman.

Step 8
It is always a good idea to review your degree audit each semester.  After logging in to Vandal Web, go to the Student Menu, Degree Audit.  This is your personal advising tool and the more you review it the more sense it will make.
