The Doctoral Program

The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) and the University of Idaho have joined to educate professionals at the Ph.D level in a high quality tropical research program meeting North American standards. Students are admitted to both institutions simultaneously and are considered joint doctoral students.

 
Admission Requirements  
  • Master's degree from accredited institution in Canada, USA, Mexico, or other institution acceptable to both CATIE and the University of Idaho
  • Complete application packet with three letters of reference
  • Official transcripts for master's program and undergraduate program
  • Verification of financial support (UI)
       2001-2002 academic year:
         -  $17,089 is required for international graduate enrollment
         -  Idaho residents and residents of CATIE member
            nations pay $11,089
  • International students must provide a certified copy of master's and bachelor's degree
  • GRE is required
  • Proficiency in English (TOEFL score of 550 or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of Spanish
 
Degree Program  
  • Each student will have a doctoral advisory committee consisting of a minimum of two CATIE faculty members and two UI faculty members
  • One CATIE committee member and one UI committee member will serve as co-advisors
  • A study plan for each doctoral student is developed cooperatively among CATIE and UI co-advisors and the student
  • A minimum of 24 graduate course credits and 24 doctoral research credits are required
  • Every student must complete a preliminary examination and defend his/her dissertation on either campus
 
Tuition and Fees

    pay UI resident fees
    Member countries include: Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela.

  • UI student fees per semester for 2001-2002
    Resident fees = $1,630
    Non-resident tuition = $4,630
    Program fee = $1,250; plus one UI credit fee
    when student is conducting research through CATIE.

  • CATIE student fees 2001-2002
    1st year academic expenses = UI tuition rates apply
    2nd year = $10,150
    3rd year = $9,400
