The
Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center
(CATIE)
in Turrialba, Costa Rica, was established in 1973 as a non-profit,
international research and graduate center. It's graduate
education program is a continuation of those established by
IICA in 1942; a master's degree has been offered since 1946
and a doctoral degree since 1996. It has an outstanding reputation
in research on tropical agriculture and natural resources.
CATIE's work is carried out by an international faculty originating
from Europe, North America, and Latin America.
CATIE's
Network in the American Tropics:
CATIE is an institution which has a number of countries as
members, as already noted. By statue, CATIE needs to address
the research and the educational needs and opportunities in
these member nations. Full members include Belize, Brazil,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico,
Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.
In addition, the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural
Cooperation (IICA) is a full member. This implies that research
activities are carried out in all these countries from time
to time. CATIE is also involved in a great deal of training
(outreach) in all these member countries.
