Placement Files
Placement files are an official repository for letters of recommendation written for students/alumni who are:
- Applying for employment in K-12 and post-secondary education OR
- Applying for admission to graduate/professional schools
Establishing a file saves your letter writer from having to produce multiple letters for your applications. It allows you to have letters of recommendation held and mailed to numerous institutions and school districts, which ensures the confidentiality of letters. This service is available to current University of Idaho students and alumni only.
You have the option of establishing a “confidential” or “non-confidential” file.
- Confidential file – you will not be allowed to view the letters of recommendation held in your file.
- Non-Confidential file – contains letters of recommendation which you can view. Non-confidential letters are used most frequently for K-12 teaching employment.
A placement file is active for 10 years from the date of last use. Registrants receive five free file processing requests to use within one calendar year of establishing their placement file. After they have used the five free requests, or after one calendar year has passed since they established their file, whichever comes first, they are required to pay for their file processing requests. After 10 years of inactivity, placement files are destroyed. After your placement file is destroyed, you may re-establish a new placement file, for a $25 fee, from the date of last use. The Career Center will no longer keep placement files for 40 years. (see new placement file retention policy below)
Files for employment in non-education industries will no longer be created. Placement files will be limited to those applying for education employment and graduate/professional schools only.
