CALS Advancement Internship Program
Opportunities for Student Engagement
The University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences expanded efforts to engage with its stakeholders by creating an array of internships in 2014 through the Robert and Alvena Deerkop Scholarship Endowment. The Deerkop’s, both veterans of World War II, farmed near Harvard, Idaho, and endowed the scholarships to benefit CALS students.
Robert was born in Latah County in 1919 and attended the University of Idaho in the late 1930s before entering the U.S. Army in September 1940. After serving in the Pacific Theater, he was discharged as a master sergeant in September 1945.
Alvena served in the Australian Navy as a WRAN or member of the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service during World War II. She moved to the United States in 1961, traveling to Potlatch, Idaho, that Christmas.
Robert and Alvena were married in 1962. They farmed between Palouse, Washington, and Potlatch for 21 years, and then moved to Harvard, where they continued to farm and raise Aberdeen Angus cattle. Robert died in 2008 at the age of 88 and Alvena died in 2012 at the age of 90.
