Dr. Jianli Chen's mission is to develop an accelerated and internationally recognized wheat breeding and genetics program with emphasis on the development of winter and spring wheat cultivars with high agronomic adaptability to irrigated and rainfed agriculture in the state of Idaho, with good disease and pest resistance, and with desirable end-use quality to meet the needs of the wheat industry, both foreign and domestic.

Research Summary:
Accelerated breeding for Idaho and Pacific NW wheat commodity using a combination of traditional wheat by maize hybridization, and marker-assisted breeding methods

Phenotyping and assciation mapping of water and nitrogen use efficiency in wheat and barley genotypes from the National Small Grains Collection

Mapping and marker-assisted breeding for predominant diseases (Stripe rust, stem rust, dwarf bunt, fusarium head blight, and dryland foot rot), pest (Hessian fly) resistance, and end-use quality
