Niccolls Renovation Project

Give to the Campaign for Niccolls Renovation.

At the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences, some things will never change: our accomplished, caring, and nationally respected faculty and our bright, creative, and high-achieving students. For more than a century, our graduates have embarked on a multitude of rewarding endeavors with singular preparation. Taught by exceptional faculty, they have contributed exceptionally to the fields they have pursued.

Other things must change. Today’s apparel and textiles industry, for example, is almost entirely global. Apparel designers in one nation work for customers in a second nation who have their garments manufactured in a third nation and finished in a fourth. Many of today’s meals are prepared in large quantities and consumed in cafeterias, restaurants, and assisted-living settings that must meet increasingly rigorous standards. And, for at least a few hours a day, many of today’s young children build essential skills in high-quality early care and educational programs away from home.

Our dearly loved Niccolls Building, dedicated in 1953, no longer best serves our students and their prospective employers. Altogether, $5 million in crucial renovations and enhancements are needed if we are to continue to provide a first-rate education, retain superior faculty and students, and reap governmental and private research funding in the 21st century.

The project includes:

  • Remodeling the Foods Laboratory
  • Refurbishing the Child Development Laboratory
  • Globally connecting the Clothing & Textiles Laboratory
  • Faculty enhancements

Other building enhancements will include:
  • State-of-the-art multimedia equipment and 21st century seating, lighting, windows, acoustics, flooring, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation.
  • At least one “high-performance” classroom with compressed video communications to deliver education to students at other locations and to receive instruction from educators at other sites.
  • Minor masonry restoration of building exterior.
