I joined the Department of Animal & Veterinary Science (AVS) at the University of Idaho in January of 2000, following an almost five-year stint as Extension Livestock Specialist with the University of Vermont Extension System. I work out of the Twin Falls Research & Extension Center which is located in the Evergreen Building on the College of Southern Idaho campus.

My appointment is 85% Extension and 15% teaching. As an Extension Beef Cattle Specialist for the University of Idaho, I am reponsible for coordinating Beef Extension programming throughout the state and serving as a resource for the stakeholders, including beef producers, allied industry, veterinarians, Extension educators and the general public.

My Extension program focuses on breeding and genetics, beef quality assurance (BQA), general management, and reproduction. I coordinated the BQA program from 2000 to 2004 and have co-coordinated the Idaho BQA program with Drs. Jason Ahola and John Hall since 2005. The focus of the Idaho BQA program is to raise the awareness of beef cattle management practices that affect beef  quality. We have developed BQA information for beef producers, dairy producers, college students, youth and the general public and have delivered the information in a variety of venues and through a variety of methods. In 2010, Jackie Owens joined the program and we are expanding the BQA program with educational sessions for veterinarians, feedlots, auction markets, and transporters.

In addition to BQA activities, I coordinate the Intermountain Cow Symposium which is a biennial educational event for beef producers. Recently, a collaborative effort with Dr. Kelly Crane, Extension Range Specialist, has transformed the event into the Intermountain Rangeland Livestock Symposium (next installment – January 2011). I have collaborated with other faculty to conduct applied research projects on handling and storage of vaccines, marketing of cull cows, retained ownership, estrus synchronization, intramuscular fat deposition, residual feed intake, and the adoption of beef quality assurance principles on Idaho dairies. In addition, I serve as the
chair of the Western Beef Resource committee, which is responsible for the publication, updates, and delivery of the Cow-Calf Management Guide and Cattle Producers Library.

My teaching responsibilities include instruction for Genetics of Livestock Improvement (AVS 330) and a portion of Beef Cattle Science (AVS 474). AVS 330 is a campus and outreach course that is offered in Moscow and Twin Falls with instruction occurring via impressed video. The course is also cross listed with the College of Southern Idaho (AGRI 254) and Washington State University (AS 330). Lectures for AVS 474 are also made available in Moscow and Twin Falls via compressed video. I also offer a directed study class associated with the Intermountain Cow Symposium (AVS 499).
