The College of Art and Architecture is a leader in art and design research. From sustainable and green design to innovative sculpting techniques, our faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise.
Research in the Classroom
We consider teaching and research to be complementary activities that reinforce each other. Faculty members bring their research into the classroom and involve their students, both undergraduate and graduate, in their research programs.
Students have outstanding opportunities to partake in research addressing some of the most pressing issues facing communities today. These opportunities most often take the form of hands-on studios. Current studio projects include:
- Redevelopment planning of Cascade, Idaho
- Restoration of Paradise Creek in Moscow, Idaho
- Sustainability of the Basque culture in Boise through interactive virtual environments
- Design-build project of a carbon-neutral building on the University of Idaho, McCall field campus

Sustainability and Regenerative Design
The college is a lead partner in several university-wide initiatives focused on sustainability at the University, in the state and around the world. Our faculty contributes research and expertise to the following projects:
Integrated Design Lab and Urban Design Center
The Integrated Design Lab and the Urban Design Center each provide critical outreach and research to professional designers, community planners, builders, nonprofits, businesses, governmental agencies and other organizations. These facilities, both located in Boise, also create outstanding research and learning opportunities for our design students.
