Portfolio

Exploring the social, historical and ecological values of a site, the landscape architect considers the uniqueness of the place and envision its transformations.

Students in our BS in Environmental Design and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) are involved in design studios with hands-on projects involving local communities; classes where they gain knowledge of ecological patterns and systems as well as history and theory of design as it relates to natural and constructed environments; and acquire manual and digital skills that are essential in the profession of landscape architect, designer and planner.

Master's Projects

The MLA graduate project or thesis is the student’s capstone research and design product, and the evidence of the overall student preparation to enter the profession. Defense of master’s products before the faculty and students as well as invited professionals is a significant measure demonstrating that students can communicate the breadth and synthesis of their research, technology, communication, and design skills.

The MLA master’s projects at the University of Idaho are usually developed as service-learning and outreach projects that involve diverse communities placed locally and nationally.

The Center for Resilient Communities (CRC) engages in their sponsored projects landscape architecture students as research assistants, who eventually present their work at international conferences and publish in scholarly papers.

Since 2018, six MLA students have presented their master’s project and research at the CELA Conference (Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture): Alyssa and Aaron Vincent, and Zipeng Guo in 2022; Chad Lorentzen and Katherine Woodhouse in 2020; Chad Lorentzen and Mandi Roberts in 2019; Mandi Roberts in 2018.
