The Architecture and Interior Design’s Rome Studies program takes place each summer, with students traveling to Italy for eight weeks of rigorous study.

The program runs from mid-May through mid-July. Students work in a studio space and live in apartments in the center of Rome. Two field trips take students to various locations around Italy, with past trips including visits to Tuscany (Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Firenze), Umbria (Spoleto, Foligno, Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto), and the Amalfi Coast (Paestum, Atrani, Amalfi, Ravello).

Guest faculty members from other programs provide studio critiques and walking tours. Past guests have included faculty from Cornell University, The American University in Rome, The American Institute for Roman Culture, Northeastern University, and the Sapienza Universita di Roma. Also, one faculty member from the University of Idaho visits for two weeks during the program to participate in one of the field trips as well as daily classes while in Rome.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the professional degree program and have at least a 2.5 GPA. The five-credit design studio may be used as a substitute for one of the two required fourth-year design studios. Two additional courses are required as part of the program – a two-credit sketching and painting class, and a two-credit class on the history of Rome’s urban, art and architectural development.

Scholarships for study abroad are available through the University of Idaho International Programs Office. Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships and to seek other forms of financial aid through their Financial Aid Office.
